moments in the mommyhood - camping with a heck-of-a-lotta golfing!
these pics are posted a little bit late due to my weekend laziness. it was so nice to just hang out at home this weekend and do absolutely nothing that this post got delayed and i decided to take monday off for the long weekend. it's been relaxing, fun and the perfect way to start a busy fall.
the pics above are from our recent camping trip to parksville, bc where we spent more time playing mini-golf and winning free games then we did sightseeing and roaming the beaches. the mini-golf course was addicting and probably the best one i have played at. if you're ever out that way make sure to stop and play at riptide lagoon adventure golf - it's lots of fun and the wee ones even get clubs toddler sized!
we checked out the canadian sand sculpting competition during their annual beachfest and also the biggest playground/waterpark i have ever laid eyes upon! this playground was seriously enormous. i think mackenzie had found her heaven and could have stayed there all day. needless to say the mini-golf beckoned and we didn't stay too long..haha. i am even proud to say i got a couple of hole in ones and won a free game! not too shabby for a not too often golfer.
how was your weekend? anyone else addicted to mini-golf out there?
weekend wishes
wishing you a weekend filled with moments of those last summer rays, sunshine splashes, pretty skirts, twirls in the sun and of course, lots of fun. this is our first weekend home in a bit so we are going to spend a lot of time lounging, relaxing and definitely not packing/unpacking. hope yours is just as good :)
what are your plans for the weekend? how do you plan on enjoying the last bit of summer?

the pics above just summed up my mood so perfectly i couldn't help posting all of them. i don't know about you guys but i'm soaking up every last bit of summer we have left.
we are heading out for.............yep, you guessed it, camping - again!!! oh my! my poor body can only take so much more tenting with a 2 year old! eek! i have been having dreams of owning my own girlified trailer to cuddle up at night in safe from the bears. i'm not sure if i've mentioned this before but i am deathly afraid of bears, so all this tent camping has been wreaking havoc on my nerves. god forbid i have to go pee in the night, it isn't pretty. i pretty much go into full panic mode and freak out....my poor family. last time i camped i sprinted through poor innocent people's campsites and flew in our tent almost knocking it over all because i heard a man snoring and thought it was a bear. oh well, what's a girl to do? i love camping, just not the bears :)
i'm so digging the album wonder by lisa mitchell at the moment. this is a must play for road trips and will surely be blaring from my car's stereo this weekend! our fave is "clean white love", mackenzie dances up a storm to that one! can we say girl crush???

what are your plans for the weekend? any running away from bears?
p.s. don't forget to leave your comments here for the giveaway to win a gift certificate to *shey* [b]!!!!! the giveaway ends monday.

Your photography is stunning! What kind of camera are you currently using?
Thank you! I use a Canon Rebel Xti. While I love my camera, I am hoping to get a new camera soon. Maybe for Christmas? :) My husband gets many hints throughout each week. ha!
I started to do professional photography a couple of years ago. I haven't had a chance to really pursue it hardcore yet, but I hope to soon. I have been so busy with my business, life and moving that I just haven't had the chance, but I truly love photography so I hope to have my website up soon, and really pursue it. I have been doing photography since I was a sophomore in high school, and it's just "my thing". I loved it instantly, and I know I always will.
I decided to go professional, because I really think I can help share a story of some one's life through my camera lens. Seeing a baby or older child truly smile at me without forcing a smile from them just makes my whole photo shoot! As a photographer it's my job to make my subjects feel at ease, for that is where the best pictures always are... the ones where they are cracking up, or staring off in the distance, or laughing at my silly faces. I always walk away from a shoot smiling.
My blog came first. I have been blogging for about 2 1/2 years, though, as you can see, not on the same blog. This is my 3rd blog, actually. ha ha!
Thank you so much! Well, this is truly funny, because I really just thought of the idea while we lived in North Carolina. It was summer, and I was doing a photo shoot in Downtown Raleigh. It was really hot and humid. My camera strap was rubbing on my neck for the 2 hours it took to do that modeling shoot, and man! I remember how red my neck was from my strap. It was raw, and hurt really bad. I also remember thinking that there had to be a way to prevent that from happening. I didn't think I was the only person out there that had a serious hate for the stock camera strap, but I truly didn't know. That is literally how *Shey*[B] started.
User friendliness aside, I have also found that Etsy has so many buyers and sellers that it's the best start for a small business like mine.
Favourite camera accessory? Favorite subject to photograph?
My favorite camera accessory? Wow. That's a great question. I am definitely going to have to say my lenses are my favorite camera accessory... though, I don't know if I would put them in that category or the necessity category. Either way, I am nothing without my lenses. And I must have fixed lenses. I have found those are my favorite, and capture crisper cleaner images.
I noticed you also do quite a bit of sewing. I loved the pillows you made. How long have you been sewing for and how did you learn?
Believe it or not, I have only been sewing for a little over a year. I started sewing last summer, and then started my business a month later. :) My husband's grandmother was an AMAZING seamstress. She even made my wedding dress for me, which was completely amazing. I know that she inspired me a lot while she was alive. I loved watching her create something from nothing. That's how I feel when I sit down to create something. Make a flat piece of pretty fabric into something useful and pretty. I love that! And a lot of times you can sit down, and a couple hours later you have transformed that fabric and breathed life into it to become something amazing. When purchasing my first sewing machine last summer, I taught myself how to sew. I made lots of mistakes. Lots! But, that was OK with me, it was how I learned. And I am so happy I did!
Do you have any plans to branch out from camera straps to other items in the future?
Yes I do, actually! I can't really say a whole lot right this moment, but I have actually contemplated it. Many of my friends tell me or insist that I must open another Etsy shop to sell some of my other creations other than camera strap slipcovers. I say different shop, because I don't like to mix merchandise. ;) So, stay tuned!
Thank you! I think my girls are beautiful too. ha ha! Ah, balance. This is hard for me, because so many things demand my attention, and sometimes all at once. When I first started my camera strap slipcover business I had NO idea how big it was going to get. So I just made them when I made them. We had just moved to Arizona, so there wasn't much in the way of photo shoots. But, very quickly my business began to grow and grow. I quickly found myself sitting at my sewing machine more and more. I have realized that I can't do everything, and I am totally able to accept it. But it was me who had to tell myself that I couldn't do it all, and to let it go before I actually did. Once I did, then life was OK again. Even though my house was a disaster. :) I just have to put what's important to me first, and that is my family. No matter what, they are my number 1 priority, and I don't want anything taking away from precious time with them. They grow too quickly.
Which photographers inspire you? Any faves?
I have a couple favorite photographers. One being DrewB Photography. She captures everything beautifully! I always feel inspired by her photographs.
I also love The Pioneer Woman's photography. Every time I look at her photographs I feel like I was there witnessing what she had photographed. She makes everyday ranching seem extraordinary and glamorous. I love that!
My most favorite is definitely the skirt I just made my daughter. It turned out so much better than I could have ever hoped. Now I want to make myself one! :)
There have been a couple projects I have made in the past year that weren't great. At all. I made my daughter, Zoe a dress. After sewing the armholes shut, I almost gave up on it, but decided to finish it. Her arms barely fit. ha ha!
I also made my mother a quilt that was bound to be the death of me. While I still ended up giving it to her for Christmas, and she cried over it, I swore I would never make another quilt again. ha ha! It practically fell apart the day I was going to mail it. I cried over it, and then fixed it. Was glad to see it go. :) I didn't stay true to my promise of never making another quilt, though. I did make a quilt top and backing very recently, but I sent it off to a company that actually finishes the quilt for you... so, I see many more quilts in my future. :)
My oldest does! She even has her own Hello Kitty sewing machine that "Santa" brought her. She has sewn on it a couple of times, and I plan on helping her more with it soon. She doesn't quite get the concept of threading and re-threading the machine. But with more practice she will.
What line of fabrics do you sew with the most? What kind of sewing machine do you use?
I use a lot of Michael Miller Damask prints. I love Damask! It is a timeless fabric that doesn't go out of style... at least it never has for me. I generally use a lot of Michael Miller prints in my projects... there are a lot of designers that are picked up by him that I like a lot. I have recently fallen in love with Studio E. But I pretty much love most fabric, so I just buy what I like.
I have 2 sewing machines. I have a Singer Confidence. I LOVE this machine. It can sew and sew and sew forever. I also have a Singer Futura embroidery/sewing machine. I use that for embroidery only.
If you had no budget or time constraint what would you do - a photo shoot or sew a project?
Can I do a photo shoot of a project I have sewn? ha ha! In all honesty, I would rather do a high end modeling shoot. I love super creative "out there" photo shoots like you see on America's Next Top Model and other shows. The crazy make up, hair and the extreme situations. That is my all time dream.
Do you like to listen to music while you work and if so what tunes get your groove on?
Yes, I LOVE music! I listen to anything from Linkin Park [one of my all time favorite bands, and I happen to know the bass player, which is cool!] to Claude Debussy. Just whatever I feel like. Most of the time I start with Claude and move on to something more up beat like Linkin Park, Daughtry, 3Oh! 3, Black Eyed Peas, etc. etc.
Do you have a fave outfit?
While I one day would love to be a fashion photographer, I am not huge into fashion for myself. I am a super casual dresser. Workout pants and a t-shirt, or cotton/linen capri pants and a t-shirt. I also wear jeans and t-shirts sometimes, but I am at home most of the time, and sitting at a sewing machine for a couple hours and chasing after my almost 3 year old is just so much easier dressed comfortably.
What are your top 5 blogs/websites to read daily? Sorry to ask this, I know it's hard, but hey - enquiring minds need to know!?
Wow! This is tough! I read at least 100 blogs, and I love them all for different reasons. Hmmmm... OK, I will give you the blogs that I can't wait to read...
* Make It And Love It * Joy's Hope * Bakerella * Happy Together * Lil Blue Boo * Flickr Ooops, I think I snuck in an extra ;)
Sigh. Twilight. I LOVE Twilight, yes I do! I think my favorite is definitely Eclipse. While there are parts in each book I adore, I just love all of Eclipse. I have read each book in the Twilight series 5 times. Hilarious, I know. I am an avid reader. More like a book worm. And it all started with Twilight. ;) I am now a Young Adult/Teen Fiction book junkie! 2-3 books a week sometimes more! Thanks Stephanie Meyer for making an addict out of me. :) I am totally TEAM EDWARD! Can I get a woot woot ladies? ;) Can't wait for New Moon in theatres in November. OK, I will stop. I sound like a walking advertisment now. ha ha!
thanks so much for being part of the mommyhood shealynn, it's been so fun getting to know you - keep in touch! i wish we could see "new moon" together, i'll be thinking of you as my sis and i are drooling at edward on the big screen. we must email after we see it to dish the dirt!

mommyhood moments - weekend wedding
it was hard to get any of the shots to turn out great in color with my little ol' camera - the sun was shining right on us and it was very, very bright. so, black and white to the rescue right? our friends make the sweetest couple and we wish them a lifetime of happiness and laughter. their wedding was very special and very romantic.

makin' it in the mommyhood - arcadia placemat & tablerunner
we were away on the weekend attending our close friends chris & jill's wedding. we camped, and yes, getting ready with a 2 year old for a wedding in a tent was quite the experience - thankfully the groom's parents had an extra hotel room that they offered usage of the bathroom to us! thanks guys! it sure came in handy being married to the best man :)
chris & jill know i love making gifts so for their wedding present i decided to sew them up a lovely set of placemats & tablerunner for their new apartment! i hope they love them as much as i do. it was incredibly hard to part with one of my favorite fabric lines - arcadia by moda for sanae. this stuff could easily be plastered all over my whole house. it's tough to find in yardage, but i managed to scoop some from the lovely shop "the sproutz store". their service was friendly, fast and reliable! i highly recommend them and you all know how picky i am when it comes to fabric shops - thanks again sharon, i appreciate it :)
before you start always remember to wash your material first, you'll thank me later. iron the fabric before cutting and iron again before doing your topsticthing if needed.
pretty little placemats
1) cut out 8 rectangles of your fave fabric to the size of your liking. i did 20" x 15", i cut horribly so always leave room for myself to even things out, yes, it's embarrassing, but hey, we all have our faults..haha.
2) cut out 4 pieces of batting the same size.
3) make your sandwich & remember your batting goes on the outside for the sewing so when you flip it right side out your batting ends up being the peanut butter in your whole wheat sandwich :P
4) sew all 3 sides together and then leaving a 4 -5 inch opening sew the 4th side closed. pull your fabric right side out.
5) handstich the opening shut. topstich around the outer edge of the placemat about 1 - 1/2" in from the outside border or quilt the top of the placemat in whatever manner you so desire! have fun with it and play with your pattern. you could also add a bias trim to the edges or use contrasting thread, the options are endless and totally up to lil ol you.
twirly table runner:
1) cut out out two long pieces of fabric to your liking. this would be based on the length and width of your table. you want it to run centered down the table (usually) and not take up the whole table.
2) sew those pieces together on all 3 sides and then leaving about a 2-3 inch opening close up the 4th side.
3) pull right side out. iron. handstitch the opening closed. i have one of these in my home made from a repurposed pillow case and i love the top stitch effect on the ends of the runner so i decided to top stitch one straight line and then add a fancy twirly one to go with. you could add any detail you want here, or ever stitch on the whole runner.
i wish i had pics of the wrapping job i did in the tent..haha. that was part of the fun for me, but it was not good lighting and the pics just didn't make it. hint - i used fresh lavender, buttons, chocolate brown ribbon and a cute little tag that got rolled up with some lovely dark brown linen napkins i found in town that matched the fabric perfectly.
what do you guys think? have you made this for yourself or as a gift? make sure to add your creations to our flickr group!

mommyhood radar - b.poetic
Life is short. B. happy. Wear flowers.
"It all started with a little seedling of an idea about some blooms. Grown from a deep love of accessorizing with the good looking stuff from nature, blooms add a pop of color to any outfit, because we know you’re no wallflower."

"Each bloom is handmade from vintage fabrics, sewn together with love, so they each have their own unique little personality. We weed out the rascally ones before we put them in the store, of course. The organic texture of vintage fabrics makes them perfectly imperfect. Each piece comes with its own little poem tag and is hand-cut, constructed and stitched together by me, for you, with love. "

makin' it in the mommyhood - quilted coasters
i have made some in the past for my mom, other grandma & friends and got hooked! they are simple to make, a great way to practice your quilting skills and look fabulous when done! i love how they can just add that little punch of color and fun to a room for such a small expense. it's a great fabric stash buster and there are endless possibilities here to use your imagination. practice your log cabins, your pinwheels, or any other type of quilting block you desire, use contrasting thread, embroider, applique, heck, if you've made a block and it didn't turn out quite the way you wanted for the quilt, why not use it as a coaster or a pot holder?
here's the steps i used to make my coaster:
1. cut out 8 pieces of fabric the size of your choosing. i made mine about 6" x 6" (i like them to be a bit larger than normal).
2. cut out 4 pieces of batting the same size as your coaster.
3. this is the part that always confuses me (yes, i am admitting i am confused by this). you need to make your "sandwich" so to speak. one of your outer sides should be batting. that's what i always seem to forget. i kept putting the batting in the middle of the fabric, and i would pin all my coasters and yes, even start sewing them, when i realized oops, when i turn this out, there
will be batting as an outer fabric!!! eek! so just remember, the batting goes on the outside.
4. sew all three sides of the coaster and leave about a 3" opening on the 4th side to pull the coaster right side through.
5. hand sew your opening closed.
6. quilt away! i top stitched three squares around the outer border of the coaster. in the past i have filled the whole coaster with those squares and it looks great as well.
have you been making coasters? what's your favorite way to make them?

this week's etsy monday in the mommyhood is inspired by me finally finishing my first quilt. i went on a little hunt over on etsy to see what's what in the baby blanket making/quilting world over there and wowsa - there are some lovely, lovely blankies to be found. what baby wouldn't want to be curled up under any of these handmade goodies - heck, what person wouldn't want to be? i sure as heck would love to have any of these in my home.
what's your favorite blankie at the moment? any recommendations?
weekend wishes
me and mackenzie are flying solo for one night this weekend. my hubby is off to van for a stag and i'm crossing my fingers he'll drag his cute butt into ikea sunday morning for me. i've been drooling over the new 2010 ikea catalogue!!!! what have you been lusting after at ikea lately?
it's been raining and damp/cold here and i'm missing the 30+ weather already. good thing we got some fall clothes for mackenzie last weekend cause we've been using them all week. i guess it's a glimpse of the endless rain to come...bah! if it weren't so beautiful here in the fall it would be really depressing.
my omi (grandma) is coming to stay with us on sunday for a few days and we're very excited to see her and get lots of grandma/great grandma time. we've been missing her.
i'm wishing you all a wonderful weekend filled with hot tea, umbrellas (or if you're lucky - sunshine), cuddles and lots of girl time laughs.
what are your weekend plans? have you started fall shopping already too?
