goop cookie roundup & a middle of the night snack mantra

i got hooked on gwyneth paltrow's website "GOOP" about a month or so ago and had to share this yummy cookie roundup she has this week. MAKE features her favorite cookie recipes - watch out though, there are no waist line friendly goodies in this listing. I truly wouldn't even believe ol'gwynnie even eats cookies she's so slim, if I hadn't seen her eat the way she does on her show "Spain - On the Road Again".

it's somehow sickeningly fulfilling to watch a skinny celebrity chow down on some high caloric, fat filled food. isn't it weird how the world works? you feel guilty for feeling happy that she might gain a pound or two and somehow it just makes it that much more ok for you to go eat some high calorie foods saying to yourself in the middle of the night as you stand in front of the fridge preparing to chow down and throw all your workouts that day out the window "well if gwyneth can eat it and stay slim than i can too" mantra. the mind works in mysterious ways.

what are your thoughts? do you feel the same way? do you have a middle of the night snack mantra?

moments in the mommyhood - baseball, soccer & a sneak peek tutorial

jer oiled it all up and is shaping it to the ball

we finally found a baseball glove that fit my little hands this weekend. it has taken us about 2 years to find a glove that i feel comfortable with. we're super excited to go out and throw the ball. only thing stopping us is this nasty little thing called "a cold" that seems to be biting me on the ass. don't worry, i'm running...i don't want it. cross your fingers for me, i'm not a fast runner :P

new tutorial in the works....can't wait to show you guys! green is the word for this project.

i got a baseball glove and mackenzie got her first toddler sized soccer ball and she is in love! we figured out the other weekend the kid's got a helluva kick on her so we figured we better get her a better ball than her cheap $2 dora blow up from walmart. her and jer have been playing nonstop every night and the park.

julia and a giant bad ass beach hat

i caved in and finally bought myself one giant bad ass beach hat. i know it's pink, bright fuchsia pink (i think) but i love it anyways. i feel a bit reminiscent of julia roberts aka the rodeo drive scene. i keep putting this hat on and trotting around the house in front of jer singing pretty woman....yes, i am that much of a loser :)

i do love this color for the summer though. i found myself picking up not one, but two tanks in this color and have been enjoying that extra zing in my normally black/brown wardrobe. so all you ladies out there, join in me in breaking up the monotony of our mommy lives and don your big ass beach hats, crank up the roy orbison below and shake what your momma gave you....yeah, yeah, pretty woman....

moo, moo - i luv you

ohhhh, my business cards arrived finally from moo! moo - i luv you!!!! (sorry about the ryhme, i couldn't resist)

for any of you out there looking for new business cards, blogging cards, sticker, postcards etc, moo is the place to check out. flickr uses them and you can even upload your flickr pics direct to moo and they will rotate your album on the cards for you! how fun is that?! they also now have a location in the states to print and ship from instead of the UK so shipping times are way faster. you can also upload and design your own or use there premade designs and no, these are not your standard designs - these are super cool and lots of fun. i couldn't decide on one i loved more than the other so i designed my own. needless to say i am really pleased with how they turned out and the size and the feel of the card. it's super sturdy and their products are eco-friendly - my kind of business card.

look out people.....i've got cards!!!!!!!!

do you have a moo card? wanna share moos?

charley harper luv fest with a little monkey luvin thrown in too!

mackenzie and i cannot get enough of the book "abc's" by the late charley harper. gosh, those images are stunning and i can't stop looking at them and neither can she. i just want to paste our whole house with them. i can't even begin to choose which ones are my fave, but mackenzie loves this one:

she sits there asking jer and i "what's your favorite animal?" over and over again. too cute. my favorite animal by far is the monkey, and yes, i am a huge jane goodall fan :) i am reading her biography at the moment as well, so monkeys are on my mind. i luv monkeys. as a child i wanted to train monkeys sign language so i could talk to them and yes, even then i could never shut up, all i wanted to do was chat, chat, chat. i figured they would listen to me.

if you're looking for some more information on charley harper and his works check out "charley harper - an illustrated life" by todd oldham - you and your little ones won't be disappointed. but don't fret, if you don't have kids, there are sure to be pictures that will appeal to the graphic and design lover in all of us.

fit friday in the mommyhood - how to keep safe and in shape in the heat

{image: ecstaticist}

summer is almost here and the weather (at least where i am) is showing it. with temperatures rising higher than ever due to all of our environmental concerns how does one continue to exercise safely outdoors with all this glorious sunshine without getting ill?

here's some quick tips to help you keep safe and in shape in the heat:

1. avoid the hottest parts of the day especially 1-3pm. your safest bet is to exercise first thing in the morning or in the evening. scheduling your workouts around the 10am to 3pm time is a great way to ensure you won't be exposed to the harshest weather of the day.

{image: roadside pictures}

2. work you way into the heat gradually. if you are going to be out in warmer temperatures, build your body up to the heat gradually. allow yourself a few weeks of exercising at longer increments each time. don't just head out into 30 degree weather for a 10km run!!!!

3. drink a lot of water. dehydration is a major concern during the summertime, it's important to keep your body fluids up and the water coming in because we all know even a girl is gonna sweat buckets if it's 32 degrees outside.

4. dress appropriately. wear loose and breathable clothing. it will help keep your body cooler and believe me, nobody wants to see your workout gear stuck to your behind. don't underdress either, you don't want to be overexposed to the sun and do make sure to wear the appropriate sunscreen that is also sweat proof and waterproof. your best bet is to check for the word sport on the bottle, that usually means it is geared towards being worn during exercise.

{image: mike baird}

5. use common sense and listen to your body. you need to know when to stop. check for signs of heat stroke and exhaustion. you need to listen to your body very carefully when exercising in very hot weather, it can be very dangerous - those six pack abs are not worth it if you end up in the hospital! also, don't forget to cool down in the shade after a workout, it's important to let your body return to it's normal temperature. try to avoid going from one extreme to the next, such as very hot weather to an air conditioned room or having a shower or bath, you're just asking for trouble. your body just can't keep up.

while you don't need to stop your exercise routine, you may need to make some major adjustments to it, be extra cautious and listen to your body. but don't fret, it's worth it in the long run, and really - who are we kidding, it's better than heavy rain and snow day after day :)

notes from the mommyhood - 5 ways to help parent when you aren't at your best

all of us struggle with sick days, tired days, i don't feel like being a mom days, and i need a shower and a lot more sleep days, but what about those who suffer from the i have an illness to deal with days? how do we survive and be a good parent on those days when we aren't at our best? sheer willpower, inner strength and a little thing called "a mother's love" - it's strong, powerful and always pulls you through.

any mom out there dealing with a chronic illness is sure to feel overpowered, exhausted, and just plain want to give up and stay in bed. that's a good idea if you are seriously ill, but if you are just going through your normal everyday side effects, staying in bed all day isn't always an option. where do we turn to in this case? how do we get by?

i find myself drawing on the fact that i have made it this far. i suffer from a bad case of endometriosis, (click on the word if you want to know more about endometriosis and it's symptoms), and i have survived a ruptured ovarian cyst, 3 surgeries and live minus 1 ovary & 1 fallopian tube. i hate the word endometriosis and i hate the disease, but i don't allow myself to spread the hate farther than that. i have dealt with my anger and sadness over this illness and luckily beat the "why am i the one who has to have this" blues.

{image: ashleyrose}

a few years ago, after suffering from endometriosis for quite some time, i was almost at the point of getting a hysterectomy and moving on with my life in a more healthier way when the need for a child of my own outweighed my desire to be healthy and pain free. i decided to try my last resort (which at the time seemed like going to see theweebeejeebee witch doctor), and went to see a naturopathic physician. i have never looked back. 3 years later i have a gorgeous 2 year old daughter (when nobody thought i would have one) , no more horomone pills and painkillers, a disease that is mostly under control (when my specialist had run out of options) and a fresh outlook on alternative medicine. what i don't have though, is the magic ability to make those hard days disappear - and yes, they still exist, but i do have a few steps that have sure made them a lot easier for me to deal with.

{image: hien_it}

1) surround yourself with a great support group of family and friends. they may not always be able to come by and watch your child for you, but a quick phone call to boost your spirits or take your mind of your illness can never hurt. make sure your spouse/partner & family understands the full realms of your illness. too often women are embarrassed by their sickness and don't fully explain what we are dealing with to our loved ones. they can't help us if they don't know we are even suffering.

{image:p-j-trash}

2) make time to truly enjoy when you are feeling good no matter how small it is. savour those days or moments and take it in, memorize it. use that memory the next time you are feeling ill, weak, or in pain and make it your happy place. a strong, vivid, and cheerful memory can help relax your body and allow you to pull through it even when your little one is having a cranky, no nap day.

3) get rest. rest whenever you can. ya right you say? well, whether that means sitting and playing with the kids instead of running around or leaving the chores till another day, just do what you can to take it easy. nap when your child naps (if they nap that is). i have a hard time with this one, but eventually my body will give out and i will crash during naptime. that's the key though, listen to your body, if you need that nap, your body will go along with you. you may not be able to go to bed and sleep all day but you can allow your body to rest up in small ways throughout the day and rest is rest when it comes down to it.

{image: gifrancis}

4) make your life simpler. try to alleviate any unnecessary stress. stress plays havoc with our hormones and our emotional/mental wellness. simplify your home, your chores and your extracurricular activities. learn to say no to things/people when you just can't do it and don't feel guilty for your illness or your actions - you are just making yourself and your children a priority.

try to organize your home in a way that there isn't a lot of clutter to see/clean and chores are on a easy schedule during the week for you to handle (i need to do more of this). i truly do believe in the power of the beauty in simplicity. the less exterior stress in our lives we have the easier it is to deal with the more pertinent issues we have and leaves more time for happier activities with our kids and for getting well.

{image: jasmic}

5) banish the guilt. seriously, don't let that pester. it will make you feel worse - always. stick a note on your fridge or somewhere you will see often of something inspirational that will lift your spirits or give you strength to get through that moment. sometimes even a hug from your child can help. i find when i am feeling ill and run down a simple hug from my child makes a world of difference. they seem to know when we aren't feeling well and will either act up (little monsters they can be..haha) or in those wonderful little moments say exactly what you need to hear. a little tlc and an "i love you mama, it's ok" can magically make me feel that much better and give me the strength to get up and carry on that day. you aren't always going to have good days, there will be bad ones, but you can't control that, so there is no need for you to feel guilt for something you didn't do and cannot control.

overall, the most important thing i have come to realize is to truly love yourself. no matter what illness is affecting you, or even if it is a bad case of the flu, loving oneself is an important part of being a good parent and in allowing your body to heal. sometimes we are our bodies worst enemies. positive thinking and trying to live a happier existence can truly help give you the power to make it through the day with a smile on your face that isn't forced and who knows, you may even feel better too :)

{if anyone you know is suffering from endometriosis or you think you may be, please go to the the endometriosis association's website - you are not alone. there are wonderful support groups all over the world and a wealth of knowledge and research to be shared on this site. sometimes the best step is to educate yourself on you or your loved ones illnesses. with generous donations and time, hopefully, one day, this horrible disease that silently and painfully affects so many of us will have a cure.}

moments in the mommyhood - morningtime mischief

daddytime mischief i found on the camera the other morning....

sneak peek - our weekend

i finally made myself something to wear from normal fabric! i have had the spring ruffle top from "made by rae" on my to make list for ages and finally got one done. i adore this top. it's not the most flattering thing on me, but it's sure great for those bloated days. i changed a few things here and there and added 2 buttons to the bottom of the shirt where the big pleats folded over. i found that without these holding the shirt down, my large girls (aka boobs) made this shirt look enormous on me.

sorry about all the creases, i have been living in the shirt and was too lazy to iron it just to wear it again. overall, i found this project ok for someone who has already begun sewing, not so great for a beginner though. it was easier to just try to make it for me, than it was to follow the exact instructions. i also prefer not to stitch in the ditch on clothing due to my lack of skill in this area, instead i hand stitched the straps on and the fold on the top border.

i sewed up some nifty little throw pillows for our bench out on the deck.

we also ate our first strawberry that we have ever grown -it was the best strawberry we have ever tasted, and in the words of kelly ripa - "i'm just sayin....".

how was your weekend?

new neighbour in the mommyhood!

we have a new neighbour in the mommyhood who is helping to keep our little community alive, fun and thriving. please welcome michelle martin of healthy coffee....yum!

now before you run off saying, eww, an ad/sponsor, i just wanna say that for us in the mommyhood this was a tough choice we decided to make to help keep things going here at the rate that we would like to and to also help luvinthemommyhood continue to grow and feature more new and exciting tutorials and articles.

i love writing this blog and it is my passion, so i am possessive over it and do not feel like bombarding it with ugly ads and flashing gadgets. i decided if i was going to take on sponsors that they would have to be something i believe in and that i think are relevant to our readership. michelle fit that bill. hell, all mom's drink coffee (ok, must of us do and those who don't are lucky and i seriously don't know how you have energy to make it through the day with kids) and secondly, we all need something that is a bit healthier than your average coffee. michelle is a busy mom of 2 gorgeous kids, whose business it is to sell this delicious and yummy coffee.

what's so special about this coffee? well, you'll have to click here to find out, but let me tell you, i am a coffee whore (sorry about the bad language). i would seriously die without mine. my naturopathic doc took me off for a few months once and i thought i was going to die - migraines and all. i usually drink 2 cups a day (strong ones) followed by that horrible caffeine burnout we all experience. it took some convincing from one of my best buds jaime to get me to try a new coffee and boy am i sure glad i did. i had more energy, only needed one cup and found it easier to focus during the day. as a mom, with mom brain, focusing and concentrating can sometimes be tricky for me. i have also heard of other mom's in town having a release from allergies, and also help from other health issues. they even have hot chocolate for kids or green tea if you aren't into coffee.

so help keep luvinthemommyhood going and click here to read about "the healthier coffee" and go ahead and give it a try. michelle is donating $10 CDN from each box of coffee sold this month to the pediatric ICU at Victoria General Hospital this month and is also offering a special deal to all you luvinthemommyhood readers:

****free shipping on your first order******

just mention to michelle you heard about the coffee here and michelle will ship you your first order free! happy sipping!

p.s. - would you like to see your ad on our site?

if you think your business, shop, blog, etc would be a great fit for the mommyhood, please send an email to luvinthemommyhood@yahoo.ca with your business and contact information.

we know times are tough right now and the mommyhood is offering competitive and reasonable rates to showcase your business to moms & crafters worldwide! we also offer special 3 month rates. who knows, we may even barter and trade services with you!

so don't delay - contact the mommyhood today! spaces are limited and we are only offering room for a few ads on the site. this is a great way to make sure your business will be showcased. if you would like to see blog statistics and numbers just ask :)

we look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to the neighbourhood!
